This just in from the Wyoming ACLU:

Dear Rainbow Family Gathering Participates:

As a result of a number of press articles regarding conflicts at the 2008 Rainbow Family Gathering in Wyoming the Wyoming Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union requested complaints, narratives or reports regarding individuals experiences at The Gathering. We were particularly interested in a conflict that occurred in “kiddy village”. Kiddy village is an area set-aside for those participants that have children and is particularly directed to children’s experience.

There are no official Rainbow Family representatives, documents or incorporations.  It is my understanding t hey have been gathering since the 1970’s and generally believe in non-violence and alternative lifestyles. They gather once a year in national forests to pray for the planet and for peace.

One of the United States Forest Service’s  (USFS) press releases regarding the 2008 Rainbow Family Gathering stated that “about 400” Rainbow Family members surrounded a squad of officers trying to leave the “kiddy village” area after an arrest.  The press release also stated that Rainbow Family members threw sticks and rocks at federal officers. Both the USFS and the Rainbow family agree the incident started when officers arrested a family member for an alleged drug offense.

The accounts of the experiences of individuals at this years gathering came from a number of sources: many of the reporters were long time Rainbow Family members and participants, some were casual or first time attendees and others Wyoming residents that just wanted to see “what was going on.”  Among our reporters were doctors, lawyers, National Guard members, a nurse, and a retired carpenter from Lander.  One of the telling items in all of the reporting was how similar the experiences were. The similarities maintained=0 Adespite the date, time, number of people reporting, age, or place of occurrence. These similarities in experiences and allegations provided an added element of validity to the reporting.

The USFS has stated that they are simply at the gatherings to “handle the perimeter” and to deal with “specific problems”.  The reality of their presence seems very different however.

From the beginning of the gathering all respondents reported a massive law enforcement presence.  At the Welcome Gate law enforcement massed and stopped and searched car after car. Individuals were stopped for hundreds of insignificant violations – dirty license plates, obstructed vision (rear view mirrors with items hanging on them), tail light out, not using turn signal for turn, the list goes on and on.  These individuals were forced to drive 68 miles to court to pay a $15 dollar fine and $25 dollars in court costs. Many of the tickets were dismissed by prosecutors or judges. Out of 142 violations heard in a special magistrates court 90 were fined nothing or dismissed, 32 individuals were fined under $100.00 and 20 were issued fines of over 100, the largest fine being one issued for $525.00. Once stopped, individuals were asked what kind of drugs they had, if they denied having drugs they were of ten searched, drug dogs were used. Individuals were told that drug dogs had “hit” on their vehicle and they better just tell them where the drugs were.  This procedure of continual mass stops and searches of vehicles went on during the entire gathering.

Armed officers walked through gathering asking people what they were doing or what kind of drugs they had on them.  People in tents were woken up and their tents were searched; individuals also reported seeing officers searching tents when people were not at their campsites.  One woman reported being at the latrine site using the latrine, she had her hand behind her back when an officer walked up and asked her what she was doing and what she had behind her back – he asked her if she was smoking pot – she showed him the toilet paper and he then walked away.

Several individuals said they either left the gathering or made a decision not to attend after seeing the numbers of law enforcement officers present.  Many people said there was an atmosphere of continual threat from law enforcement.

This type of harassment and general over zealous enforcement appear to have been the pattern in20the USFS relationship with the Rainbow Family. The USFS has set up roadblocks, safety checkpoints, rolling gauntlets, and have searched and ticketed people on the narrowest of pretexts. Law enforcement are often in full riot gear armed with sidearm, tasers and shotguns. In 2006 in Colorado the agency issued the same kind of petty offenses tickets – over 100 of them. The USFS also issued more than 500 citations for “illegal use and occupancy”. Another apparent conflict between USFS and participants in Colorado gathering resulted in the statement that participants had thrown “sticks and rocks”.  One online video shows no sticks or rocks thrown during the confrontation.  During the 2003 gathering there were reports of 8-10 mounted officers circling the gathering flying the American Flag immediately preceding the main days prayer. Individuals at this years gathering reported officers taking pictures of participants – this type of surveillance has been reported at previous gatherings. None of this behavior has been conducive to a good relationship; but often seems motivated to cause clashes between participants and law enforcement.

The participants that reported on the 2008 “kiddy village” conflict were unanimous in their version of the events:   The officers came into “kiddy village” following a man that was later charged with a marijuana complaint (this is the best of my information). The officers were armed with pepper ball guns and side arms.  When the individual was arrested a woman went up to one of the officers and asked a question – there is no indication of what was said. This woman was then thrown to the ground, handcuffed and surrounded by several officers.  At this time the crowd became upset and people were asking what was going on – individuals came into the area – at no time was it apparent that there were 400 individuals in the area.  Additionally, at no time are there any rocks or sticks seen being thrown at the officers. One reporter states he may have seen “one stick” thrown.  This is not evident in any of the videos.  Rainbow member’s state that, according to their training and belief in non-violence, they began to police themselves some of them going down on their knees and chanting and others trying to calm the crowd and back them off. Many of the participants report being shot by pepper balls in the back or when they were kneeling. One of the medical crew, a nurse, reported treating several people for multiple welts and many individuals for contact with pepper spray.  The Sublette Examiner reported that one officer was injured but I have not been able to verify that injury.

After the incident people reported being stopped by officers and told to take off their shirts so that officers could identify them to charge them with “inciting”.

John Twiss, Director of Forest Services Law Enforcement and Investigations in Washington, D. C.  Stated, “ I think we have to have that discussion within the agency.” (regarding banning the Rainbow Family from Forest Services lands) “We spend an awful lot of time and effort on these people and frankly, the taxpayers deserve better.” He also gave his clear opinion saying that Rainbow Family Members are “non-compromising” “arrogant” and “anti-authority”.

Statements such as this lead us to believe that agency personal have no intention of working with the Rainbow Family to provide a reasonable compromise for both the Family and the USFS. The pattern of antagonistic harassment that has occurred over the years makes this clear. There should be a discussion in the USFS and the US Congress regarding this history of abuse of process and individuals by the USFS.  The taxpayers and the Rainbow20Family deserve better. The continual harassment and heavy-handed enforcement methods are not necessary and only serve to cause more problems and more bad feelings. There is no reason to pay USFS personnel to issue frivolous tickets, conduct illegal searches and overburden the Federal Courts and Prosecutors.  These situations should be handled in a professional, best practices manner. The USFS seem to be more intent on provoking confrontation.

Sincerely,
Linda Burt, Executive Director
Wyoming Chapter, ACLU

Tuesday 2 Sept 08, noon Conference Call

Tom D arrived in Pearlington about 11 am this morning.  He’d not had time for a complete inspection, but gave us his initial assessment:

    * “looking good”, “much better than after Katrina”, “damage a fraction of what was predicted”.
    * Boil water status in effect; Pearlington’s well thought to be contaminated
    * He saw branches down, but not even trees
    * Power is already coming back in Pearlington
    * All roads are open and the water is receding
    * The town is empty, and folks are encouraged to take a look at their homes but not return until water, sewage, and electric services are available.
    * Trailers appear to still be on their wheels, suggesting the wind did not get severe
    * There have been no assistance requests;  the suggestion is that we will be able to stand down.

Next conference calls: 6pm tonight and noon tomorrow.

Impression: winding down.

It looks like Hancock County and the rest of southern Mississippi has gotten wet but is ok. The winds were between 30 and 80mph, but not enough to blow down buildings and flood it too terrible. We have reports from people on the ground saying they are ok. NOLa also seems to have gotten through this rather damp, but friends in the area tell me the levees have held and they are ok.

The big question is west of NOLa where the storm hit. It made landfall as a cat 2 hurricane, which was less than Katrina but still possesses plenty of destructive ability. The group I am a part of, the Mississippi Medical Assistance Team, has been in constant communication with out friends who run the Hancock County EOC and have alerted us that they are kinda bored. Thank G-d.

More information as it becomes available. West of NOLa is still in the dark and there may be a job to do yet.

Gustav is looking nasty. Current over Cuba and heading right for the Gulf Coast. The medical folks have been emailing and calling each other constantly. We are even considering where to deploy if we end up back in Hancock Co. Charles B and I are likely to scout out the old rail depot and see about setting up a clinic there- assuming the building is still standing. Gustav is currently rated at cat 4 and could be spinning up to a 5. If it hits further west or east and leaves MS relatively untouched then we all agreed we'd follow the storm and help pick up the pieces there.

Gustav has hit Western Cuba is now northwest heading right for the LA/MS Gulf Coast. I am reading it's a Cat 4. Katrina was a Cat 3. Will know more in about 12 hours.

getting the old team back together

Post-Katrina, the people who came together to volunteer and serve their fellow mankind were among the greatest grouping of people in ever to walk this planet. We had the most important mission ever and were waking up every morning and working with every fiber of our being to save lives and provide comfort for those who survived the storm.

Three years later, to the day, we're getting the old team back together. I spoke to a bunch people today on the phone today who were all down in Mississippi with me back in 2005. They are mostly medical people, doctors and nurses, but some others who are just damn good logistics and dealing with bureaucracies. I spoke with Paula, Kevin B, Aaron Funk, Charles B, Missy Y. These are people who are deeply ingrained in my heart and soul as we worked together so hard three years ago. Charles and I spoke about combining resources, Kevin about infrastructure, Funk about being official, Paula about getting out butts down there and getting things done right and Missy, now a doctor in her third year of residency, about how to keep sane. Missy co-ran the clinic with me in Waveland three years ago.

This time the difference is clear- we know where to go, we know each other and we know what to expect worst-case-scenario. And it'll hopefully be easier to get volunteers seeing as many have already done so and know what to expect.

I just pray this hurricane turns into thunderstorm. My eyes are glued to the National Hurricane Center and I'll leave as early as Monday.

I'm in a romantic mood.

So, I am posting my favorite love song: Erev Shel Shoshanim (Evening of Roses)

Evening of roses
Let's go out to the grove
Myrrh, perfumes, and incense
Are a threshold at your feet.

The night falls slowly
A breeze of roses blows
Let me whisper a song to you quietly
A song of love.

At dawn, a dove is cooing
Your hair is filled with dew
Your lips to the morning are like a rose
I'll pick it for myself.

2 years since....

An email which I just sent to the now largely dormant email list of those who volunteered with me in Waveland, MS after Hurricane Katrina. I miss them all so, so much....
=============================================================================

Howdy, folks.

It's been 2 years since Katrina made landfall. In another few days will be 2 years since Rob, Hawker, Arjay, Clovis, Aaron, myself and a bunch of other hippies found our way to the parking lot of Fred's on Hwy 90 in Waveland.

Those 3 months I spent in Waveland were the most powerful and humbling of my entire life. Without a doubt, I will never, ever forget the experiences, people, emotions, sadness and happiness which were unique to every day.

I miss the community which we created, the brother/sisterhood which I acutely felt every day, waking up in the morning knowing thousands of people depended on me to do my job and going to bed at night with the satisfying knowledge that I was part of a beautiful ensemble which fed, clothes and cared for thousands.

Love and miss you all,
Stone

Din Din

JoChanna, TK and AL were over for dinner. I whipped up Baruch's Famous Organic Veggie Soup, pesgetti with marinara sauce and I cut off soy dogs and put them in the sauce.

I think the food was pretty fantastic. Mmm hmm.

Sans a bike seat

As I prepared to set for to school/work this morning at 8:55am, I noticed something looked mighty wrong with my bicycle. Indeed, the seat was missing. Someone in the middle of the night decided to remove my bike seat and, I hope, donate it to some poverty stricken child. However, there was no note left for me. The more interesting part is they actually got through the security cable which is designed to befuddle such attempts. It seems that my old bike seat had a quick release latch and the security cable is more of a 30 second annoyance.

So off to Broadway Bike Shop I went at 9am, only to find out they did not indeed have in stock the bar which fits into my bike frame and referred me to Cambridge Bicycle. There I got at 9:25, only to see a sign which indicated their opening at 10am. So i waited and indeed a line formed behind me, including people who were there to pick up their bikes or get repairs.

It took all of 20 minutes to find a bar, clamp, seat and bike lock caddy for me. I got another security cable, but instead of it being an annoyance I made it permanent by going to the hardware store and getting two locks to secure the cable to the seat and another to the bike frame. Good luck in stealing my bike seat again, you theives!!!!!

Twas a long day

One bad thing about work on contract is having to produce a lot of results in a short period of time. As I am currently contracted to Harvard for 3 months as a Mac guru/geek, I am pushing the progress of things in order to produce a lot of results. Sadly, that meant that I didn't eat lunch today. Not doing that again.

Speaking of lunch, Heidance came over yesterday and we ate lunch in the children's park across the street. We sat at one of the picnic benches that little kids use. It was tiny and our legs didn't sit, but we had a blast.

I am tired, thus I will take a nap. Glenn leaves tomorrow, which is sad. But he's making dinner tonight and Chanidance and Heidance are coming for dinner. Maybe Abby also.

old friends mixed with stardust

Abby calls me this afternoon and announces she is bored. I agree and thus she comes over and we determine our options. After playing with balloons and discussing desserts, we agree a movie is in order. After driving around Boston in order to find a theater that had parking available and didn't cost $25 (due to something called a Red Sox game) we went to the Boston Commons theater to watch the movie Stardust. IT WAS AMAZING! Such imagination, imagery, fantasy. GO SEE IT NOW.

LLB informed me the other day that an old friend from my high school days was going to briefly be in town. This young woman, Chasiah, I have not seen in ::gulp:: 10 years. It's been that long. They came for lunch today and we had a grand old reunion. It was so lovely to see her again and I pray it shan't be another 10 years, for then I would be 37 and that's old. So, if you're reading this Chasiah, it was a pleasure to see you once again. Many blessings to you.

Bed time.

Chanidance!

So one of my best friends here in Cambridge is Chanida. Some time ago I named her "Chanidance". Heidi, aka Heidance, is part of my posse here and I are currently setting up a surprise birthday party for Chanidance. Chanidance has informed us on many occaitons that she hates cats. So we have decorated my living room with about 20 pictures of cats, downloaded music of cats meowing and bought all sorts of cat stuff. She is coming in about 30 minutes and this is gonna be soooo funny!!!!!!!!!

Welcome

At long last I have now created a blog here on this website known formally as livejournal. I am hoping this will become a regular event. In the past 2+ years I have had two other blogs. One was a website which I once had and updated the blog somewhat regularly. The other was/is over at myspace. Since myspace blogs are difficult to get to, I have decided to move my blog here. Now I must find out if I can export the myspace blog and import it here. That shall be something I deal with at a later point.

In the future I intend on putting up posts on a variety of issues related to my life. One of the things which I intend to publish is some musings about the extended time I spent in the Gulf Coast. I have a lot to say about that and it's something which is very near and dear to my heart.

I may also blog from time to time about my experiences as an EMT on an ambulance. I have been doing that for 5 years and I really love it. Just wish it paid more. A lot more. And we had a lot more respect. Ugg.

What I will NOT be posting on is politics. I know nothing about politics and I don't pretend to have any insight onto it. I know I dont like war and I don't like when people make war for bad reasons. I know I like things in the ways of love, peace and good vibes. I think there should be more of that.

So, welcome me to livejournal. Mazel tov and bezeq shalom.

Baruch
